EXCLUSIVE-Amazon teams with Nokia, snubs Google for maps -sources

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc's (AMZN.O) new Kindle Fire will have mapping services via a tie-up with Nokia Oyj (NOK1V.HE), according to two people familiar with the situation, filling a gap in the tablet's capabilities while snubbing Google Inc's popular service.

The world's largest Internet retailer, which says its nine-month old Kindle Fire now accounts for one in five U.S. tablet sales, has teamed up with Nokia on mapping, the two people told Reuters.

Amazon will release at least one new version of the Kindle Fire next Thursday.

Amazon will also add location capabilities to the new Kindle Fire, which requires either a GPS chip or a process known as WiFi triangulation, the people said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak ahead of Thursday's launch event.

Mapping services, which are popular features on tablets, typically include street maps, information about local businesses and sometimes traffic status. They can also support navigation instructions and third-party applications that depend on location information, such as travel services.

Location capabilities mark the location of tablet and smart phone users.

Google Inc's (GOOG.O) Nexus 7 tablet, which competes directly with the Kindle Fire, comes with GPS receiver chips to support location and mapping functions.

The first Kindle Fire launched last year and at $199 costs half the price of the entry-level Apple Inc (AAPL.O) iPad, helping it rapidly gain consumer acceptance. On Thursday, Amazon said its Kindle Fires had completely sold out. [ID:nL2E8JU6CF]

Analysts say the 7-inch device helps drive sales of digital media such as ebooks and music, which in turn propels core retail growth for the company.

Amazon may unveil larger versions of the Fire on Thursday in Los Angeles, analysts and media say, which will compete more directly with the iPad.

Although the Kindle now runs on an early version of Google's Android, which Amazon developed into its own operating system, it does not integrate Google Maps into the device. That means users had to access Google Maps via a Web browser, or download map apps from third-party developers.

A Nokia spokesman declined to comment and an Amazon spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment.

GOING NATIVE

Shares of the Internet retailer closed down 0.4 percent at $246.22 on Thursday, after hitting a record high of $250 earlier following the announcement that it had run out of Kindle Fires.

Cooperating with Nokia may help Amazon develop integrated, or "native," mapping functionality for the Kindle Fire without relying on Google Maps. Nokia is one of the world's largest mapping companies, through its 2007 acquisition of Navteq.

Apple took a similar step earlier this year, when it dropped Google Maps in favor of its own mapping features for its next mobile operating system, known as iOS 6. As part of the switch, Apple signed a global licensing deal with TomTom NV (TOM2.AS), another leading mapping company, for its map content and related information.

In July, Amazon agreed to buy mapping startup UpNext, which specializes in detailed 3D maps of cities and some sporting stadiums.

Arctic Sea Ice Reaches Record Low With Weeks Left in Melting Season

Arctic sea ice is melting faster than climate models projected, already shrinking to a record minimum with several more weeks of this year’s melting season, according to scientists on both sides of the Atlantic.
“The sea ice area went below the sea ice area in 2007 around Aug. 20,” said Ola Johannessen , founding director of the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, an independent non-profit research foundation affiliated with the University of Bergen, Norway, that conducts basic and applied environmental and climate research.
“In general, the ice area and extent has consistently decreased since 1960 and the reason is mainly the increase of CO2,” he said.
According to a report released today by U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center, Arctic sea ice area has shrunk to 1.58 million square miles, breaking the previous minimum of 1.61 million square miles, set in 2007.
What Will This Mean for the World?
With more water ice-free, the amount of shipping through the Northern Sea Route and the North West Passage, even directly across the Arctic Ocean, will increase, Johannessen said.
There could also be increased oil production, since the the Arctic holds 32 percent of the world’s untapped oil  and gas reserves. Russia has put its first oil rig in the Arctic into operation, but it became a target of environmentalists last week when Greenpeace activists scaled it in protest.
But according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, the loss of sea is likely to accelerate global warming trends.
“We’re seeing a decline of roughly round 12 percent per decade, 60,000 square miles per year.  To give a sense of that, the average U.S. state size is about 30,000 square miles.  Which means we’re losing about losing an average state every two years in terms of average sea ice cover,” NSIDC research scientist Walt Meir told ABC News.
Arctic sea ice keeps the polar region cold and helps to moderate global climate. Over the past 30 years there has been a dramatic decrease in the thickness and extent of ice in the arctic.
“Melting of the Arctic is bad for climate change and fisheries,” Johannessen said.  Loss of sea ice will impact “ocean and weather patterns, and there will be increased teleconnection between high and low latitudes affecting the monsoon system in Asia and other parts of the world.”
Melt Also Self-Reinforcing
There’s no turning back, scientists agree.  Since sea ice is white, it reflects 80 percent of the sunlight hitting it back back into space; the less of it is the more heat the darker Arctic will absorb. Instead of reflecting 80 percent, it will absorb 90 percent of the sunlight,  which will accelerate the thaw, scientists say. Several studies have found the Arctic could be ice free by 2040 or sooner.
As the Arctic melts, the ocean around it becomes warmer, leading to more loss of sea ice, and therefore a rise in sea levels.  Scientists say this sea level rise is impossible to avoid.
The Arctic Ocean has been covered with ice for more than 2.5 million years. During interglacial periods like the current one, ice melts in the summer and thaws in the winter.  Arctic sea ice reaches its maximum seasonal extent in March and shrinks through spring and summer to a minimum extent in September.
“The Arctic sea ice cap was acting kind of like an air conditioner for the earth’s climate system, and keeping it cooler than it would have been without the ice, and now we’re starting to lose that, we’re starting to lose coolant from that air conditioner in a sense,” Meir said.  ”We’ve lost 40 percent of Arctic sea ice in the summertime, that’s effectively like taking everything east of the Mississippi, and a little bit west away.”
Throughout human civilization, this melting and freezing Arctic sea ice has been more or less consistent. However, what is being experienced now is unprecedented, scientists say.
“These climate systems are interconnected. These climate systems are not like Las Vegas: What happened in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic,” Meir told ABC News.  ”As the Arctic warms, as the balance changes, it may affect things like average rainfall, we’ll have more droughts in some areas, some areas will have more rain. Heavier snowfalls in winter, there was a big ‘snowpocalypse’  in Washington, D.C., a couple of years ago, and there was some indication sea ice might have played a role in that.  It’s hard to pinpoint isolated events, but thing like that are things we will expect to see as the ice decreases.”

Mars rover: Wind sensor damaged on Nasa's Curiosity

Nasa has reported its first setback in the Curiosity rover mission to Mars.

A sensor on the robot's weather station that takes wind readings has sustained damage.

The mission team stresses this is not a major problem and will merely degrade some measurements - not prevent them.

It is not certain how the damage occurred but engineers suspect surface stones thrown up during Curiosity's rocket-powered landing may have struck sensor circuits and broken the wiring.

Nasa is describing the news as an isolated "disappointment" in what has otherwise been a spectacular start to the mission.

Javier Gomez-Elvira, the principal investigator on the broken instrumentation - the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (Rems) - said he was hopeful of finding a good way to get past the issue.

"We are working to recover as much functionality as possible," he told reporters.
Curiosity - also known as the Mars Science Laboratory, MSL - touched down in the equatorial Gale Crater two weeks ago.

It will operate on Mars for at least two Earth years, looking for evidence that the planet may once have had the conditions suitable to host microbial life.

Engineers are close to completing their programme of post-landing check-outs on Curiosity.

This has involved powering up all of the machine's instruments, and it was during this testing that the problem was found on Rems.

The weather station is a Spanish contribution to the rover project.

It records air and ground temperature, air pressure and humidity, wind speed and direction, as well the amount of ultraviolet radiation falling on the surface.

These parameters are measured from sensors distributed around the rover, but a number are held on two finger-like mini-booms positioned halfway up the vehicle's camera mast. This is where the wind sensors are located.

The Rems team first noticed there was something wrong when readings from the side-facing boom were being returned saturated at high and low values.

Further investigation suggested small wires exposed on the sensor circuits were open, probably severed. It is permanent damage.
No-one can say for sure how this happened, but engineers are working on the theory that grit thrown on to the rover by the descent crane's exhaust plume cut the small wires.

The wind sensor on the forward-facing mini-boom is unaffected. With just the one sensor, it makes it difficult to fully understand wind behaviour.

"It degrades our ability to detect wind speed and direction when the wind is blowing from a particular direction, but we think we can work around that," said Curiosity's deputy project scientist, Ashwin Vasavada.

All the other Rems measurements look good.

Air temperatures in Gale Crater have been up to about 2.7C in the Martian afternoon, and down to minus 75C in the middle of the Martian night.

In general, the rover is in rude health. On Monday, it wiggled its front and back wheels to check its steering capability.
Commands will now be sent up to initiate the first drive.

"We're going to drive forward a few metres, turn in place about 90 degrees and then back up," said mission manager Mike Watkins. "We should make tracks."

Another major engineering milestone passed this week has been the unpacking of Curiosity's robotic arm.

It was flexed to exercise its joints. The arm holds a 30kg tool turret on its end that includes a drill to take powered samples from rocks.

ldest bones from modern humans in Asia discovered

(LiveScience) Newfound pieces of human skull from "the Cave of the Monkeys" in Laos are the earliest skeletal evidence yet that humans once had an ancient, rapid migration to Asia.

Anatomically modern humans first arose about 200,000 years ago in Africa. When and how our lineage then dispersed out of Africa has long proven controversial.

Archaeological evidence and genetic data suggest that modern humans rapidly migrated out of Africa and into Southeast Asia by at least 60,000 years ago. However, complicating this notion is the notable absence of fossil evidence for modern human occupation in mainland Southeast Asia, likely because those bones do not survive well in the warm, tropical region.

Now a partial skull from Tam Pa Ling, "the Cave of the Monkeys" in northern Laos helps fill in this mysterious gap in the fossil record. [See Photos of "Monkey Cave" Fossils]

"Most surprising is the fact that we found anything at all," researcher Laura Lynn Shackelford, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Illinois, told LiveScience. "Most people didn't think we'd find anything in these caves, or even in the region where we're working in mainland Southeast Asia. But we're stubborn, gone where no one's really looked before, or at least in almost a century."

Rough terrain, persistent scientists

The fossils were discovered in 2009 in the limestone cave, which is located at the top of the Pa Hang Mountain 3,840 feet (1,170 meters) above sea level.

"The cave is surrounded by lots of papaya and banana trees, so a troop of monkeys likes to come and forage there, therefore its name," Shackelford said.

There were many challenges working in this area.

"It's incredibly difficult to access the site -- it's only 150 miles (240 kilometers) from the capital, but it takes us two days to drive there because of the rough terrain," Shackelford said. "We have to hike up the side of a cliff, do a bit of rock-climbing to get to the mouth of the cave, and then going in, we have to go 60 meters (200 ft) down a slope of wet clay. We also have to carry a generator and lights with us to see in the cave. We have to push pigs out of the way to get through the jungle -- there are just pigs wandering around there." [Amazing Caves: Photos of Earth's Innards]

"Every bit of clay has to be removed and taken back up by hand, trowel and bucket, so work is incredibly slow," she added. "We only go in the dry season in the winter, so we don't really have to deal with insects and snakes -- well, we did have snakes fall into the pit while excavating. And in the cave, we've had more than our fair share of spiders and bats."

Oldest bones of modern humans

No artifacts were found at the site, nor were signs of human occupation.

"We think this fossil was outside with other fauna and flora, and during the rainy season, rain washed it into the cave," Shackelford said. "In subsequent seasons, more sediment washed into the cave and covered it."

The shape of the bone and teeth is distinctly anatomically modern human, not like those of an extinct lineage such as the Neanderthals. A variety of dating techniques of the sediments surrounding the fossils suggests they are at least 46,000 to 51,000 years old, and direct dating of the bone suggests a maximum age of about 63,000 years. This makes these fossils the earliest skeletal evidence for anatomically modern humans east of the Middle East.

These findings "change the thinking regarding modern human migration routes into Asia, that there were more routes of dispersal than previously thought," Shackelford said.

"The typical thinking was that once modern humans hugged the coastline to go from India to Southeast Asia, they went southward into Indonesia and Australasia (the region comprising Australia, New Zealand and neighboring Pacific islands)," she explained. "We think they absolutely did that, but we're also suggesting other populations probably went north or northeast toward China, and some went through the mountains into mainland Southeast Asia, taking advantage of river systems. Beforehand, no one thought they would have gone into the mountains of Laos, Vietnam and Thailand."

The researchers are now attempting to extract DNA from these fossils to see how related they may or may not be to later humans that once lived or currently live in the area. In the future, "the work we have is pretty boundless -- there are literally thousands of limestone caves we can work on in this area to look for early modern humans," Shackelford said. "We can work here for the rest of our careers or lives and not see all the caves."

The scientists detailed their findings online Aug. 20 in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

New Kings Heath garden show called off over rain fears

Residents who fought to reinstate a popular gardening show at a park are "very sad" it has been called off.

Residents, businesses and gardening societies joined together to set up the new Birmingham Annual Gardening Show (Bags) at Kings Heath Park next month.

Jonathan Jaffa, chair of the Bags organising committee, said the decision was made because of the wet ground conditions and forecasts of more rain.

The group plans to use a £20,000 city council grant for next year's event.

The free show, planned for the weekend of 1 September, aimed to replace the Gardeners' Weekend, which has been running for about 30 years.

Mr Jaffa said the event had attracted up to 15,000 visitors and organisers hoped the new show would see between 5,000 and 10,000 visitors.

However, Mr Jaffa added under wetter conditions the previous show "had trashed" the park, which increased the cost of staging it.

Mr Jaffa said the costs had led to the city council cancelling the Kings Heath event last year and a replacement Flower Fest in the city centre was not well attended.

Kings Heath groups sent a petition to the council in October, calling for the event to be returned to the park.

It led to the organisations, which include the Centre Partnership and Kings Heath Floral Trail, receiving the council grant to run the event.

'Traditional show'
Mr Jaffa said: "The ground is still soft from all that rainfall following the wettest summer on record and the weather forecasters are saying more rain will fall.

"The park is famous for becoming boggy and you need nice weather, relatively speaking, for the show to be successful."

He said there were fears heavy equipment, such as generators, would "churn up the park".

The chairman added the decision was taken with the council's parks department, which feared for the condition of the Green Flag venue.

The Bags committee is meeting to discuss whether some parts of the planned show, such as the allotment element, can still take place at a different site.

The Birmingham Annual Gardening Show planned to go back to its traditional roots, featuring mainly growers, rather than wholesalers and unrelated craft stalls, he said.

And a circular bus was going to link the show with the new village square and car parks.

Biggest Burmese Python Found in Florida—17.7 Feet, 87 Eggs

Florida has a new attraction—a 17.7-foot-long (5.4-meter-long) Burmese python, the biggest snake ever found in the southeastern U.S. state, scientists say.

What's more, a necropsy on the euthanized python revealed she was carrying 87 eggs—also a state record for the species, a University of Florida team announced Monday.

Captured in Everglades National Park, the "monstrous" constrictor will eventually be displayed at the Florida Museum of Natural History, according to the university.

The Everglades is home to a growing population of the invasive Southeast Asian pythons, many of which have either escaped into or been dumped into the wild. (See Everglades pictures.)

Sometimes adopted as a pet, the Burmese python is one of nine species of constrictor snakes—and about a million individual constrictors—that have been imported into the United States over the past 30 years, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Burmese Python Finding Florida "Ideal"

Florida's previous biggest-snake record-holder was a 16.8-foot-long (5.12-meter-long) Burmese python. Finding a bigger one "is a great indication that conditions are really perfect for them," said J.D. Willson, a biologist and snake expert at the University of Arkansas.

Burmese pythons, he said, grow biggest where there's plentiful food—in captivity, they can reach lengths of up to 20 feet (6 meters).

A Burmese python as big as the new titleholder "should be able to eat any native animal in South Florida"—even Florida panthers, Willson said. And in fact, recent study showed that Burmese pythons are preying on a wide range of native species, some of which happen to be in decline.

(See a picture of a Burmese python that exploded eating an American alligator in the Everglades.)

Another reason bigger is better: Large snakes retain heat better. That may explain how heftier pythons—though adapted to steamy environments—manage to survive the occasional winter freeze in Florida, he added.

The number of eggs the recently caught female was carrying is another sign that the snake was a healthy animal, and that Florida's "environmental conditions are ideal" for Burmese pythons, said Whit Gibbons, a professor emeritus of ecology and head of outreach for the Savannah River Ecology Lab at the University of Georgia.

Stopping the Burmese Python's Spread

To biologist Cheryl Millett, those 87 eggs are "just more evidence that they are pretty much established—they're breeding in the Everglades," she said.

That's why Millett's group, a public-private Nature Conservancy partnership called Python Patrol, focuses not on eradicating invasive pythons but on stopping the spread of the snake to sensitive areas, such as bird breeding spots, the Florida Keys, or residential neighborhoods.

"I don't think we can necessarily get rid of every last one. We just want to keep them from moving elsewhere," Millett said.

Recent federal and state laws have also attempted to limit the trade and ownership of invasive snakes.

In the end, though, Savannah River's Gibbons said, it may be Mother Nature who puts the Burmese python on notice.

"You can never know what might befall a species," Gibbons said. "There could be a disease outbreak, or the prey base could diminish sufficiently."

But, he said, "I think pythons are going to be part of the native fauna in the next few decades."

Mars as you've never seen it:

After releasing exciting images of Mars, NASA's Curiosity rover is undergoing a crucial four day ‘brain transplant’.
Engineers will update the rover’s software which is currently in its flight stage to prepare it for its further missions on Mars, NASA said.
After successfully landing on the Red Planet on August 5, the rover produced incredible pictures showing  exactly what you would see if you were standing on the surface of Mars on a late afternoon.
During the update, engineers will add two crucial functions to Curiosity – the ability to drive over the planet’s rocky terrain and the ability to use the geochemistry lab’s sampling system.

Allergic diseases ‘gender related’ news

Professor Hasan Arshad, a consultant in allergy and immunology at Southampton General Hospital, found that allergies such as asthma and eczema were gender-related and not simply hereditary.

“We have known for decades that allergy runs in the family and many thought that maternal effect was greater than paternal effect due to a mother’s closeness to her child, but we have discovered the inheritance is from mother to daughter and father to son,” said Prof Arshad.

His team assessed 1,456 patients recruited from birth 23 years ago and found the risk of asthma in boys was only increased if their fathers suffered from the condition while, if mothers had asthma, it doubled the risk in their daughters but not sons.

The research, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and funded by the National Institute of Health in the US, also showed maternal eczema led to a 50% increased risk of eczema in girls, while paternal eczema did the same for boys.

“In the past, studies looking at the effect of parental allergy on children have not split their samples according to the sex of the child, having assumed the mother and father influence is identical in males and females,” explained Prof Arshad, who is also chairman of allergy and immunology at the University of Southampton.

“Now, with these groundbreaking findings, we should see a change in the way we assess a child’s risk of disease, asking girls for the allergy history of their mother and boys for that of their father.

“This work also opens up novel areas for further research in the genetics of allergy as to why this sex dependent effect occurs and, if we can find the reason, we can try to find a way of preventing sex-specific disease,” he added.

Bevis Man, from the British Skin Foundation charity, welcomed the research. “This news is very interesting and sheds light on how eczema from parents can ultimately affect their children,” he said. “There has been a great deal of research over the past 10 years focusing on the genetics of eczema and the genetic defects that may lead to the development of eczema.

“This news will hopefully spur a new wave of research looking into the differences between the sexes and the role in which a child is likely to develop the disease. Although a large proportion of children will simply ‘grow out’ of eczema, for many adults this is not the case, so any new developments in understanding the disease are most welcome.”

The power of intermittent fasting

I'd always thought of fasting as something unpleasant, with no obvious long term benefits. So when I was asked to make a documentary that would involve me going without food, I was not keen as I was sure I would not enjoy it.

But the Horizon editor assured me there was great new science and that I might see some dramatic improvements to my body. So, of course, I said, "yes".

I am not strong-willed enough to diet over the long term, but I am extremely interested in the reasons why eating less might lead to increased life span, particularly as scientists think it may be possible to get the benefits without the pain.
How you age is powerfully shaped by your genes. But there's not much you can do about that.

Calorie restriction, eating well but not much, is one of the few things that has been shown to extend life expectancy, at least in animals. We've known since the 1930s that mice put on a low-calorie, nutrient-rich diet live far longer. There is mounting evidence that the same is true in monkeys.

Growth hormone
The world record for extending life expectancy in a mammal is held by a new type of mouse which can expect to live an extra 40%, equivalent to a human living to 120 or even longer.

It has been genetically engineered so its body produces very low levels of a growth hormone called IGF-1, high levels of which seem to lead to accelerated ageing and age-related diseases, while low levels are protective.

Professor Longo has investigated growth hormone deficiency in humans
A similar, but natural, genetic mutation has been found in humans with Laron syndrome, a rare condition that affects fewer than 350 people worldwide. The very low levels of IGF-1 their bodies produce means they are short, but this also seems to protect them against cancer and diabetes, two common age-related diseases.

The IGF-1 hormone (insulin-like growth factor) is one of the drivers which keep our bodies in go-go mode, with cells driven to reproduce. This is fine when you are growing, but not so good later in life.

There is now evidence suggesting that IGF-1 levels can be lowered by what you eat. Studies on calorie restrictors suggest that eating less helps, but it is not enough

As well as cutting calories you have to cut your protein intake. Not entirely - that would be a very bad idea. It's about sticking to recommended guidelines, something most of us fail to do.

The reason seems to be that when our bodies no longer have access to food they switch from "growth mode" to "repair mode".

As levels of the IGF-1 hormone drop, a number of repair genes appear to get switched on according to ongoing research by Professor Valter Longo of the University of Southern California.

Intermittent fasting
One area of current research into diet is Alternate Day fasting (ADF), involving eating what you want one day, then a very restricted diet (fewer than 600 calories) the next, and most surprisingly, it does not seem to matter that much what you eat on non-fast days.

Dr Krista Varady of the University of Illinois at Chicago carried out an eight-week trial comparing two groups of overweight patients on ADF.

"If you were sticking to your fast days, then in terms of cardiovascular disease risk, it didn't seem to matter if you were eating a high-fat or low-fat diet on your feed (non-fast) days," she said.

I decided I couldn't manage ADF, it was just too impractical. Instead I did an easier version, the so-called 5:2 diet. As the name implies you eat normally 5 days a week, then two days a week you eat 500 calories if you are a woman, or 600 calories, if you are a man.

There are no firm rules because so far there have been few proper human trials. I found that I could get through my fast days best if I had a light breakfast (scrambled eggs, thin slice of ham, lots of black tea, adding up to about 300 calories), lots of water and herbal tea during the day, then a light dinner (grilled fish with lots of vegetables) at night.
On my feed days I ate what I normally do and felt no need to gorge.

I stuck to this diet for 5 weeks, during which time I lost nearly a stone and my blood markers, like IGF-1, glucose and cholesterol, improved. If I can sustain that, it will greatly reduce my risk of contracting age-related diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Current medical opinion is that the benefits of fasting are unproven and until there are more human studies it's better to eat at least 2000 calories a day. If you really want to fast then you should do it in a proper clinic or under medical supervision, because there are many people, such as pregnant women or diabetics on medication, for whom it could be dangerous.

I was closely monitored throughout and found the 5:2 surprisingly easy. I will almost certainly continue doing it, albeit less often. Fasting, like eating, is best done in moderation.

Chemotherapy can 'encourage cancer', claims new research

Some anti-cancer drugs have been proven to damage the DNA of normal tissue, causing it to secrete chemicals and resist treatment.
But far from being seen as a negative development in the battle against cancer, scientists hope the discovery will help enhance treatment.
‘The next step is to find ways to target these resistance mechanisms to make chemotherapy more effective,’ said Prof Fran Balkwill of Cancer  Research UK.
‘Cancer treatments don’t just affect cancer cells but can also target cells in and around tumours.
‘Sometimes this can be good – for instance, chemotherapy can stimulate surrounding healthy immune cells to attack tumours.
‘But this work confirms that healthy cells surrounding tumours can also make them resistant to treatment.’
Dr Peter Nelson, who carried out the research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, explained: ‘Cancer cells inside the body live in a very complex environment or neighbourhood.
‘Where the tumour cell resides and who its neighbours are influence its response to therapy.’
The research, which was published in the online journal Nature Medicine, looked at cancer cells taken from prostate, breast and ovarian cancer patients who had been receiving chemotherapy.
Blocking the treatment response of fibroblasts – a type of normal, non-cancerous cell found near tumours – could be one way to improve the effectiveness of chemothe

Mom's genes may explain why women outlive men

An evolutionary "loophole" might explain why males of many species live shorter lives than their female counterparts, a new study finds.
The loophole lies in the mitochondria, the energy-generating parts of our cells. The mitochondria have their own DNA, separate from the DNA that resides in the nucleus of the cell that we usually think of when we think of the genome. In almost all species, the mitochondria DNA is passed down solely from mother to child, without input from dad.
This direct line of inheritance may allow harmful mutations to accumulate, according to a new study detailed today (Aug. 2) in the journal Current Biology. Ordinarily, natural selection helps keep harmful mutations to a minimum by ensuring they're not passed down to offspring. But if a mitochondrial DNA mutation is dangerous only to males and doesn't harm females, there's nothing to stop mom from passing it to her daughters and sons.
"If a mitochondrial mutation pops up that is benign in females, or a mutation pops up that is beneficial to females, this mutation will slip through the gates of natural selection and go through to the next generation," said study researcher Damian Dowling, an evolutionary biologist at Monash Univeristy in Australia.
